The Timezone App

Ever since I started podcasting with international friends I have loathed, LOATHED, scheduling across timezones. It is so appallingly awkward to figure out, in a conversation, what time for me works for which time for you. I’ve tried every timezone app and scheduling website and none of them ever seem to quite get it. Over years of doing this I eventually realised that the issue is that time isn’t so much about places as it is about people. I don’t really care that my friend lives in London, I care about what time 8pm Tuesday is for them. So I pulled the thread and eventually created The Timezone App.

You add people from your address book and the app checks their address and gets their timezone. They then appear in the contact list with their photo, location, timezone and the current time for them. At the bottom of the screen is the “flipper”, functioning like a mechanical time-machine. Swipe it left or right to offset the time for yourself and your contacts, so skip ahead by 10 hours and you can see what time (and day) that will be for everyone in the list. Once you have found a good looking time/date you can share it or add a group event to your calendar (with automatic calendar invites).

I use this app every single day and it is a godsend! It is the definition of “Make the app you want to see in the world” and I adore using it. I am currently working on some finishing touches and will be releasing it on the App Store.
